How Can We Think of Art at a Time Like This?

How Can We Think of Art at a Time Like This?  is an online exhibition, co-curated by Barbara Pollack and Anne Verhallen, who founded Art at a Time Like This Inc. to provide a platform for the free exchange of ideas at this time of crisis.  We invited artists who are considered thought leaders, artists who struggle with futuristic pessimism, political outrage and psychic melt-downs.  With over 60 artists, adding new one each day, the exhibition offers a global perspective on what crisis means around the world today.

We hope to open a dialogue to counterbalance the sense of isolation prevalent during lockdown. We hope to provide a sense of community, coming to share emotions and opinions through art. But mostly, we provide an outlet for artists--facing cancellations and postponement of shows--to exhibit their work with an instantaneity that allows for swift response to current events.

The experience of the pandemic, Black Lives Matter, global warming, the rise of authoritarianism, the fault-lines of democracy, LGBTQ rights, feminism, growing polarization, and other topics have been featured through the artworks presented. How can we think of art at a time like this? Artists themselves provide the answer.
